Twenty thousand children move through Dallas County's protective services system each year, and most arrive with nothing but what they're wearing.

We spent a day organizing school supplies for the 20,000 children Community Partners of Dallas serves in Dallas County’s protective services system.

The morning involved sorting hundreds of boxes of crayons, glue, and notebooks. CPD maintains this inventory year-round so caseworkers can quickly access what children need. The afternoon focused on folding T-shirts for Change is Good, CPD’s annual fundraiser at NorthPark Center.

The event invites families to bring change they’ve collected throughout the year, with all proceeds supporting Dallas County children in crisis. Children who participate receive a T-shirt, and the event creates awareness about the scale of child protective services needs in our community.

The scale of need is significant. Community Partners of Dallas works directly with Child Protective Services caseworkers, providing emergency resources through their Rainbow Room, coordinating holiday drives, and funding individualized needs like therapy and medical care.

The statistics are sobering. Among families served by CPD’s Rainbow Room, 56% have annual household incomes below $14,000. Children enter the system from situations involving physical abuse, neglect, abandonment, and other trauma. Many arrive with only the clothes they’re wearing.

CPD’s work extends beyond immediate material needs. Their research shows that caseworker stability directly affects outcomes for children. When a child has only one caseworker, they have a 74% chance of finding a permanent home within a year. That number drops to 17% with two caseworkers and 5% with three. CPD addresses this by supporting caseworkers with resources, workspace, and organizational backing.

The day reinforced our commitment to supporting organizations doing direct, measurable work in Dallas.
